Behavioral Externships

Externships, both university and private practice settings, are listed below. University externships are listed first, followed by private practitioners, listed in alphabetical order of the facility’s name.

  • U.C. Davis
    Behavior externships are offered at the main campus at Davis. There is no charge for students currently enrolled in a veterinary school, up to 4 weeks. The rotation should be a minimum of 2 weeks. UCD students have first priority.   • University of Georgia
    The behavior service at the University of Georgia sees cases throughout the year. Two seniors at a time participate in all service activities during three-week blocks. Students from other veterinary colleges can participate on a space-available basis. There is no charge to students currently enrolled in veterinary programs at other universities, but available spaces are limited. Once UGA students have signed up for the spaces they want in a given year, any remaining spaces are available to other students on a first-come, first-signed-up basis.   • University of Minnesota

  • University of Pennsylvania

  • Purdue University
    Purdue has a behavior program, and regularly takes students from other universities. More information can be found at www.vet.purdue.edu/animalbehavior. Students will be fully involved in case management, and may be involved in puppy classes.   • Animal Ark Pet Hospital

    We have a progressive small animal practice and two doctors that provide behavior consultations. Our behavior caseload is somewhat intermittent and depends on the need.   • Animal Rescue League of Boston
Boston, MA
This externship includes both shelter behavior and clinical behavior experience with two behaviorists, Sheila (Segurson) D'Arpino,DVM, DACVB, and Amy Marder, VMD, CAAB. Externs will gain experience with: shelter animal enrichment and behavior evaluations, basic dog training, research to improve the lives of shelter dogs, and clinical behavior appointments (we see approximately 3- 9 appointments per week). Opportunity also exists for a combined shelter medicine/shelter behavior externship.

  • New York City Veterinary Specialists
    Manhattan, NY
    New York City Veterinary Specialists’ Behavior Service is up and running full time. Housing could be a little tough since we're in mid-town Manhattan, but if someone expresses an interest we might be able to work something out.   • New England Veterinary Behavior Associates
    Lexington, Massachusetts
    New England Veterinary Behavior Associates and the Animal Rescue League of Boston offers an externship which provides experience working with animals with behavior problems both in homes and in the shelter. Students get the opportunity to observe and participate in consultations with owned animals, help with behavioral evaluations of shelter animals, rehabilitation, and post-adoption consultations. The externship can last from 1 week to 1 month. The student will be expected to prepare a case to present at the end of the rotation and/or help out with ongoing research projects.
