A Healthier Alternative
All across the country, schools are wanting to change their lunch plan to a meal that is much healthier. The fat and grease that is found in most school lunches are a factor to the rising rate of obesity and health problems of children and teens. There are many alternatives to changing the outcome of American children, and one is having a healthier school lunch program. High schools should provide healthier school lunches because they will reduce the obesity problem in America, give kids the energy they need to stay focused in class, and receive good nutrition from having a well balanced meal.

Generally, teenagers and children skip out on important nutrients like calcium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. They also consume more calories than necessary (Wittman). A study taken by Daniel Taber has proved that kids who ate the reduced calorie lunches did not even think about purchasing unhealthy foods outside of the lunchroom. Amie Hamlin, executive director of “New York Coilition for Healthy School Food”, said she was not surprised by these results because our bodies need certain nutrients and when we give our bodies those nutrients it reduces our cravings (Weinberg). A healthier school lunch program will supply kids with these nutrients that they would otherwise be missing out on if schools stuck to the regular lunches.
Many organizations have been established to try and change the downfall of children’s health, and one organization is Let’s Move!. This breakfast and lunch program is dedicated to providing healthier foods in the nation’s school. The Institute of Medicine has recommended that the program includes more whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products, and less sodium and fat. The institute also encourages to portion the meals and ensures that  funding will be made available to schools that meet the new standards. Schools will be reimbursed an additional 6 cents for each lunch they serve in accordance with the new standards (“Healthy Schools”).
