1. Describe how typical the attitudes that Sheehy reports appear to be in the work environment you have experience.
The attitudes reported by Mr. Sheehy are nothing new to me. As a restaurant manager I experienced the same lack of respect, theft and general lack of urgency regarding customers and the importance of customers. My employees and managers were always trying to skirt around their perspective duties. I had to constantly check after 90 percent of those who worked for me. I am no longer a restaurant manager due to the lack of respect and lack of urgency as well as work ethic in the food service industry. 3. Explain whether it is more reasonable to expect workers, especially in a capitalist society, to be more devoted to their jobs, more concerned with quality and customer service, than Sheehy’s coworkers were.
No matter what industry you work in, in my opinion it is reasonable to expect EVERYONE to be devoted to what they do. If you are being paid for a job, you should do that job to the absolute best of your ability that is all apart of being a responsible adult/person. When you are devoted to a job or responsible for that job, you would automatically be devoted to all aspects of that job. This includes customer service and the quality of the food or service that you are providing.
4. Explain the reasoning behind employee theft.
There could be many reasons for employee theft. These ranged from low employee morals to employees feeling that they are underpaid and the company owes them. As a restaurant manager this was apart of everyday business. I tried to curve this by allowing my employees to eat for free when they were working and allowing them to have their employee discount on off work hours. This helped, but did not completely curve theft within my restaurant. Because of the cost to prosecute employees for theft, the consequences are minimal in most cases. When you have an employee who doesn’t care whether or not they work there, the threat of being dismissed from the company holds little sway over the individual’s actions.
