A Relationship Between The New Testament And Physical Therapy

1881 words - 8 pages

The New Testament is primarily about Jesus’ ministries and teachings. As Jesus traveled from country to country during his last three years on earth, He performed many miracles and healings of sick, lame, and demon-possessed people. As a student, I can relate to this tremendously, since I am studying pre-physical therapy. "A physical therapist can help injured or ill people improve their movement and manage their pain. These therapists are often an important part of rehabilitation and treatment of patients with chronic conditions or injuries (Occupational Outlook Handbook-Physical Therapists, 2014)." Similarly to Jesus, I can help people and maybe even help heal their injuries as a ...view middle of the document...

In Mark 2:1-12, Jesus heals a paralyzed man. Interestingly enough, this story greatly relates to the general practice of physical therapy. The paralyzed man’s friends actually lowered him to Jesus from a roof, since the crowd was so large and there was no room to get him to Jesus. The paralytic’s friends realized his need and made sure that he would become healed. Likewise, the same happens in physical therapy. When someone recognizes somebody else’s needs, do they act? Not only does a physical therapist recognize the patient’s needs, but also the family and friends of the patient do as well. Just as the friends took the paralytic to Jesus, the family or friends take the patient to physical therapy to be healed. With the help of others who are also concerned, physical therapists can meet the needs of the patient.
In the book of Luke, a beautiful story of healing is told that relates to faith. Luke 8:40-56 tells of a woman who becomes healed by faith alone. A woman suffering from bleeding for twelve years touched Jesus’ cloak as he was going to heal a girl who already died, and immediately, her internal bleeding stopped (Matthew 8:43-45). After Jesus questioned, “Who touched him?” she told him why she had touched him and how she was instantly healed (Matthew 8:45). Jesus said to her, “Daughter, your faith has healed you" (Matthew8:48). One day when I am a physical therapist, I have to put my full trust and faith in God that he will help me to help others. I recognize that I cannot do it alone and that it is only faith that releases God’s healing powers. Although I will be the one caring for and helping the patient’s injuries and illnesses, my faith in God is ultimately what allows me to heal them, just as the woman’s faith helped her to be healed.
Without a doubt, one of the most amazing miracles Jesus performs is healing Lazarus from the dead. John 11:38-53 tells this story, and the important aspect is how Jesus wants the people watching to believe in him. Lazarus’ sister Martha said to Jesus that there was a bad odor, since Lazarus had already been dead for four days (John 11:39). Then Jesus said, “Did I not tell you that if you believe, you will see the glory of God?" (John 11:40) As Jesus took away the stone and told Lazarus to come out, He said to God that He knew He heard him, but He said it for the benefit of the people standing here, so that they would believe in Him (John 11:41-43). As a result, the people most certainly did. In a certain aspect, this can relate to physical therapy as well. If I can restore my patient’s health and make them able to walk or move again, other people will see this and be more inclined to trust my work. This in return can help me gain the trust of people and furthermore help me to obtain more patients to heal. As a physical therapist, the more patients I heal, the more purpose I am fulfilling. Another story that really spoke to me from the book of John is about a lame man that...
