Every Chinese, has a role to protect 'Face'. 'Face' is a very important aspect of Chinese life. It is deeper and more profound than 'Honour' in western culture.Business Decision MakingThe most vital fundamentals of doing business internationally are the appreciation and respect for cultural differences. Appointments are a must when doing business with Chinese and being on time is vital. Do not expect to conclude your business swiftly, the decision making process is slow as many Chinese like to consult with the stars or wait for a lucky day before making a decision. The most important member of your business should lead important meetings as Chinese value rank and status. Always present and receive business cards with two hands and never write on business cards or put it in your wallet, cards should be placed in a small card case.Social BehaviourEtiquette, manners and greetings of the Chinese was built around specific rituals that symbolized the hierarchical relationships between people. Foreigners should note that personal politeness pertains only to family, friends and acquaintances; strangers are beyond their circle of friends. Personal contact between a male and a female, while not forbidden, is highly inappropriate in public. You should also be cautious when asking a woman a personal question. In China, it is a traditional custom to give gifts with a reversed demeanour. To offer a person a handsome present is to 'give them face'. When invited as a guest to dinner, you should always arrive on time or early, and business must not be discussed at meals. Bowing or nodding is the most common greeting in China, however, hand shaking is an acceptable greeting. It is recommended that foreigners wait for the Chinese to greet first, as different gestures are used by different people.Work AttitudesTo succeed in conducting business, one should have a strong and effective attitude towards working. Chinese people have different work attitudes, depending on where they live. Beijing workers place work first then family, but in Hong Kong that order is reversed. However, both Beijing and Hong Kong place a higher value on work than all other countries, except Japan. Chinese respect their employees or employer by rank, seniority and age to ensure harmony and avoid conflict between employers and employees. Employees often address their superiors by their title, rather than name. Chinese are also very competitive in all aspects of life. However education and employment are the two main areas where they strive to achieve. There is immense motivation to perform well so they can reach higher echelon of business hierarchy.CommunicationIt is important to understand how different cultural groups communicate with regards to non-verbal and verbal communication. Chinese verbal communication is much the same as many Western countries and Chinese mostly communicate verbally. Large hand movements or pointing should be avoided as it may leave a sign of arrogance. When dealing...
