Abortion A lot of Americans today support the right to have an abortion. Current society is a pro-choice generation, meaning women have the right to control their own bodies. A right to control their own reproductive capability and a right to chose when and whether to have children or not. World wide, more than a quarter of women who become pregnant have either an abortion or an unwanted baby. The reasons most women have an abortion is to terminate an unwanted pregnancy or the pregnancy threatens the life of a mother. Other reasons include termination of a genetically deformed fetus, rape, incest, poor timing, economic hardship, single parenthood and inconvenience. The first trimester and early to mid-second trimester abortions are similar procedures, with minor differences in the methods of dilation and evacuation. Vacuum aspiration dilation and evacuation procedures are done through the mid section trimester. Late second trimester and later abortions involve infusion procedures which are very different from dilation and evacuation procedures. First trimester abortions are safest, cheapest and easiest. Dilation occurs naturally during childbirth, and even slightly during menstruation to allow the release of the menstrual flow. In the abortion procedure dilation is induced by the use of dilator rods. A series of blunt tipped, narrow rods are inserted into the cervical opening to gently stretch the muscle. A narrow plastic tube, connected to a suction machine called a vacuum aspirator. Then it is inserted through the dilated cervix into the uterus.
