It is not easy to become a leader, but it is more difficult to become a successful and respected leader. In American history, there are many presidents, such as George Washington, Theodore Roosevelt, George Walker Bush, and current president, Barack Hussein Obama; among them there are successes and failures. After all those tough experiences, he still insisted his strong belief. Finally, he won the election and became one of the greatest presidents in the history of America. .
Lincoln was best known for his responsibility and faith. He took his job as president very seriously. At the night when he knew he had won the election, he said, "I went home, but not to get much sleep, for I then felt as I never had before, the responsibility that was upon me" (McPherson 28). Besides that, he opposed slavery and believed it was a morally evil. Although the people who at southern states strongly opposed, he still made a big decision that was abolition of slavery. Even as president, he was still being questioned of his decision and colleagues of the accused. He also had his doubts, defeats, and setbacks. With his firmly faith, he moved a nation and helped to free black people.
There was a Civil War during Lincoln’s tenure, it was a large scale civil war in America. Under the political situation by then, Lincoln was elected president and his policy greatly undermined the interests of the southern slave-owners, because their personal interests and personal slavery was related. Then 11 southern slave states split from the United States and
formed the Confederate States of America. Eventually, the United States refused to recognize this country, but when the southern government began an armed rebellion, the northern government was forced to fight and America has begun the Civil War.
At the beginning of the war, the north was defeated because the sudden attack from the southern. But Lincoln did not give up. He blocked all of the main ports from southern to combat the economy in southern United States. Blockade caused the shortage of food and other supplies. It leads to hyperinflation and food riots in the south. Then he opposed that use of force to resolve the war. He said “There will be no bloodshed unless it be forced upon the Government. The Government will not use force unless force is used against it’’ (Boritt 21). But it was still a difficulty to win the war although he has already minimized the bloodshed. McPherson said that the Civil War made a large and destructive damage. There were more than 620,000 of soldiers and sailors died in the struggle (McPherson 34). Finally, they won the war because of the strategic and economic advantages of northern. Because of the war, many farms and towns were destroyed. This had caused tremendous property damage and gave the people a long term trauma.
After the Civil War, whether Southerners and Northerners; hearts were full of hatred and anger. But Lincoln was a man who could forgive. He emphasized the importance of forgiving the southerners. He said ‘’I am a patient man-always willing to forgive in the Christian terms of
repentance; and also give ample time for repentance’’ (Boritt 52). He has committed to reconciliation and rally the country. Because he knew that if people retaliated to others,...
