How to Teach Middle-school Students to read
Introduction: Reading, as one of the four skills in learning a language, it is important for students to improve their reading ability. And in practical reading, students need to master some basic skills so that they can read a text in different ways for different purposes. The teaching of reading should follow some principles and the teacher should show the students some ways to develop their reading ability.
In this essay, I will first talk about the importance of reading. Then, I’d like to show the difficulties in teaching reading. Next I will discuss that how to teach middle-school students reading guided by the ESA models.

The text should be neither too long nor too short and it can stimulate students′ interests.Reading materials can be good models for English writing. In learning English, only if someone has some basic knowledge of pronunciation, vocabulary and grammar, he can possess self-educated ability. And these kinds of knowledge, mainly come from the reading of newspapers, magazines, books and so on. The teachers must help students make it in reading through Junior School classes and improve their reading ability
When teachers teach the skill of writing, we will need to show students models of what we are encouraging them to do. And it also provides opportunities to study language: vocabulary, grammar, punctuation, and the way we construct sentences, paragraphs and texts. Last but not least, good reading texts can introduce interesting topics, stimulate discussion, excite imaginative responses and be the springboard for well-rounded, fascinating lessons. So reading is one of the most important ways for the middle-school students to learn a foreign language and it plays an important role in learning a foreign language.
But it cannot be denied that reading is a complicated intellective activity that obtains information from the written language, and it is a psychological process that captures significance from the written language. Classroom teaching, as the main way for students to learn English, is important. But in middle-school, a lot of problems still exist in the English teaching especially in the teaching of reading:
1) the knowledge of the language
Knowledge of the language refers to speech, vocabulary, phrases, sentence structure, paragraphs and chapter structure of knowledge. Language is the information carrier, is the media to transmit information. Reading is activated and the call of non-visual information, the knowledge played a very significant role. It is essential to identify means of visual input. Teach middle-school English class has always been the language of knowledge and training to reading ability in verbal communication as the core of the two major tasks. If you just teach the language words of knowledge on teaching tasks that have been completed, it will seriously affect the ability of students to read because knowledge of the language addressed only form of language, can only let students listening, speaking, reading, writing correct sentences, verbal communication can not guarantee that students can enhance their reading ability.
2) the meaning of the language
Many tests showed that the learner easy to remember when the language appeared as combination of form and meaning. Thus, reading practice should be more meaningful and less mechanical exercise is needed. On the other hand, the non-linguistic information is also a very important factor.
