Reclamation has constructed more than 600 dams and reservoirs including Hoover Dam on the Colorado River and Grand Coulee on the Columbia River. Reclamation today is the largest wholesaler of water in the country 31 million people are provided; 1 out of 5 west farmers (140,000) with irrigation water for 10 million acres of farmland 60% of nations vegetables 25% of fruits and nuts (usbr.gov 2011).

Bureau of Reclamation is also the second largest producer of hydro electric power in the West U.S. with 58 power plants that provides 40 billion kilowatts hours generating nearly a billion dollars and producing over 3.5 million homes. Reclamation is a contemporary water management agency with a Strategic Plan that provides programs, initiatives and activities to help the western states and Native American tribes. Their mission is to assist in meeting the increasing water demands of the west while protecting the environment and public investment (usbr.gov 2011).

U.S. Environmental Protection Agency: An independent agency that protects human health and the environment established in 1970 to consolidate in one agency a variety of federal research, monitoring, standard-setting and enforcement activities to ensure environmental protection. EPA has been working for a cleaner, healthier environment for the American people (epa.gov 2011).

National efforts to reduce environmental risk are based on the best available scientific information federal laws protecting human health and the environment are enforced fairly and effectively. U.S. policies concerning natural resources, human health, economic growth, energy, transportation, agriculture, industry and international trade, these factors are similarly considered in establishing environmental policy the U.S. plays a leadership role in working with other nations to protect the global environment (epa.gov 2011).

Determine which of the appropriation sub-committees has jurisdiction over each agency’s budget request.
