Environment and Economy
Environment and Economy
The environment and the economy are essential parts of daily life. The environment provides a substantial foundation of resources and space to live for human beings; the economy promotes social development and improves the quality of life for people. Thus, human beings make garbage and give it back to the environment; the economy brings a number of severe environmental problems. As a result, most people are debating the relationship between environmental protection and economic development. Guo and Ma (2008) believe economic development and environmental protection contradict each other ...view middle of the document...
1). For example, although industrialization can obviously meet these needs of human beings, it also causes severe environmental problems. On the contrary, the first ecological industrial park in the USA not only protects the environment from pollution, but also boosts the local economy to meet the needs of humans (Metzler, Lecbner and Hays, 2002). By contrasting the two examples, it is obvious that the economic development of the latter can be sustainable.
In terms of sustainable environmental practices, people should avoid over-exploiting and polluting natural resources and breaking the natural balance for the next generation (Harris, 2003, p. 1). For instance, as the world population increases, food is becoming scarce. As a result, in order to meet the needs of people and make higher profits, more and more land is changed to grow more food. However, due to the changed land, some animals which lived in the Espinal Ecoregion of Argentina for many years, for example, are dying out because they cannot adapt to the new environment (Johnson and Zuleta, 2013). From the example, in order to make higher profits, people are willing to destroy the environment. This kind of environmental development is not sustainable.
Through examining the sustainable economy and environment, it is obvious that the economy and the environment should consider each other when they perform their responsibilities. In other words, sustainable development is a way to make environmental protection and economic development coexist. Next, I will discuss specifically what causes the conflict between environmental protection and economic development and then how they work together in terms of poverty, industrialization, and agriculture.
In terms of poverty, it is known that it is one cause of conflict between environmental protection and economic development. Because of poverty, people believe that they should destroy randomly and use heavily their natural resources to develop the economy. This means that environmental deterioration is getting worse. However, if they have a reasonable policy to utilize and manage the natural resources, people can reduce poverty through economic development without environmental destruction.
Poverty is one of the main causes of environmental damage. For many developing countries, natural resources are destroyed randomly in order to get rid of poverty. As a consequence, the environment is damaged. For example, when China was founded, in order to reduce poverty and meet the living demand of people, the Chinese government decided to expand farm land to grow more grain. Specifically, Chinese people began to burn the forest resources and destroy grasslands to get larger areas of arable land. As a result, burning the forests caused air pollution, which led to the prevalence of pulmonary and respiratory diseases for a long period; destroying grasslands led to soil erosion, which caused there to be empty fields. Even worse, Chinese people grew...
