Annotated bibliography
Emmerson, DK 1995, ‘Singapore and the “Asian Values” Debate’, Journal of Democracy, vol. 6, no. 4, pp. 95-105.
Beginning his article with an anecdote, Emmerson, Professor at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, makes his point clear that the idea of Asian values as opposed to democracy is questionable, and that the dynamics of people’s opinions is a critical aspect of the Asian values debate, particularly in Singapore. He successfully argues that there are manifestations of harmony and cooperation as the core of stability maintaining in Asia. However, it can be argued that Neher’s approach is Western-centric since he looks at the matter with a polemic view, separating the Asia from the West as two extremities, while with Emmerson, as referenced above, democracy in itself is a flexible concept that varies among countries in the world. Neher’s article is relevant to my discourse since it acts as a typical Western view on the subject matter with many interesting points to consider.

Moody, PR 1996, ‘Asian values’, Journal of International Affairs, vol. 50, no. 1, pp. 166-192.
Beginning his article with a quote from China’s state chairman Jiang Zemin on criticizing Western values as a camouflage for peace destruction, Peter Moody, Professor at University of Notre Dame poses from the start that Asian values is a concept inherently considered to be opposed to the West, and it is meant to be used as a self-justifying tool for both sides. Building his discourse around Confucian in China as one important force behind Asian values and expanding his discourse on human rights, his discussion is a broad one with constant juxtaposition and comparison of the two concepts through various viewpoints. One significant feature throughout the discourse is that Moody successfully points out the very basis of Confucian, which lies in the belief in “natural truths” that have to be acted upon; this resonates well with the set up of Asian values as a set of beliefs and meanings that are naturally tailored for Asians. Moody’s discourse is indeed relevant to my essay topic since Singapore, with a majority of its population and the influential, charismatic former...
