Stacey and Cassie knew that they had to listen to Big Ma but TJ convinced Stacey to come with him and when Stacey went with him, Cassie decided to follow. TJ took them to the Barnett store. Mr. Barnett begins taking care of TJ until a white lady comes in the store and says “Mr. Barnett, you waiting on anybody just know?” Mr. Barnett turns around and says “Just them.” The lady hands Mr. Barnett a long list, longer then TJ’s own and Mr. Barnett immediately went to go help her. He didn’t even say anything to Cassie, Stacey or TJ. Cassie then starts to ask “What’s he doing?” Stacey told her to hush. TJ acted like nothing happened. When Mr. Barnett was done with the lady, he came back to ...view middle of the document...

” The girl gave Cassie a strange look and Mr. Barnett didn’t look up as if he didn’t hear what Cassie said. Cassie tugged on Mr. Barnett shirt and he looked as if someone had struck him. Cassie noticing his face said “Y-you was helping us.” “Well, you just get your little black self back over there and wait some more.” Mr. Barnett said. Cassie told him that it wasent fair and how he have no right. Mr. Barnett then asked “Who little nigger is this!” “I aint nobody’s little nigger!” Mr.Barnett told Stacey to take Cassie and don’t make her come back to this store until their mother teach her what she is.
That was racist and what Mr. Barnett did to them wasent right. He knew that they were there before the white lady and the white girl. But he still took their orders before TJ, just because the color of their skin. And Mr. Barnett had no right calling Cassie a little nigger. If Cassie would have called Mr.Barnett anything that he didn’t like, she would have gotton hung. If Cassie can’t call Mr.Barnett anything then he shouldn’t have the right to call Cassie anything.
When they walked out of Mr. Barnett store, Cassie bumped into Lillian Jean Simms. This white girl. “Why don’t you look where your going?” she asked. “Well apologize” she ordered. “What?” “You bumped into me. Now you apologize.” Cassie apologized to Lillian. But then Lillian told Cassie that aint enough and she needs to get down in the road. “You crazy?” Cassie said. “You cant watch where your going, get in the road. Maybe that way you wont be bumping into decent white folks with your little nasty self.” Cassie got insulted once by Mr.Barnett and she was not gonna get insulted by Lillian Jean Simms. “I aint nasty, and if your so afraid of getting bumped, walk down there yourself.” When Cassie walked away, Lillian went in her way and Lillian brother Jeremy said “Let her pass Lillian, she aint do nothing to you.” Lillian grabbed Cassie’s arm and tried to push her into the sidewalk
