Apple Inc Case Study Analysis

Apple Incorporated is a leading designer, integrator, and manufacturer of computer hardware and software. The company started in 1976 named Apple Computers Incorporated by Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne. The Apple Company began making computing hardware and software out of Jobs’ garage in California. The company has not been without its struggles or corporate drama. In 1985, Steve Jobs was ousted from the company by the CEO, John Sculley, whom Jobs hired in 1983 to lead the company. Steve Jobs was reunited with Apple in 1997, when he was hired back as part of the corporate acquisition of NeXT, where Jobs was the CEO.

The company immediately returned to its roots of computing to provide consumers with a simple but highly functional computing system which had business, educational, and personal utility. Apple had a deep commitment to understanding how people used computing devices and a desire to develop “insanely great products” (Thomke & Feinbert, 2010). The slogan “insanely great” was first used when Apple launched the Macintosh in 1984.
Unlike many of the high tech competitors who either made computer and not software or just software and not computers, Apple made a conscience design decision to integrate both. Apple does not share it code with outsiders. It creates its own software to run on its own hardware. Apple’s commitment to and focus on simple but complex products is a large factor in the success of the company. The philosophy of Apple is to provide the complete package of software and hardware to provide better integration and seamless interface between the Apple products. This is demonstrated by the launch of iTunes to support the iPod music requirements. By creating these interfaces, Apple eliminates the dependency on outside developers who do not have the innovative DNA or product focus of Apple.
The culture at Apple Corporate starts with the people. Steve Jobs had a philosophy which he stated many times. Apple creates “insanely great” products. Apple’s motto is “Think Differently”. He hired people who have vision and a desire to create “insanely great” products. The screen splash on Apples corporate website for potential recruits reads, “Amaze Yourself, Amaze the World; A job at Apple is unlike any other you’ve had. You’ll be challenged. You’ll be inspired. And you’ll be proud. Because whatever your job is here, you’ll be part of something big” (Apple, 2011). This caption sets the tone and the culture for innovation and inspiration. The website also states “every detail matters” and “simplicity isn’t simple” (Apple, 2011). These statements capture the heart of the matter which Steve Jobs brought back to Apple when he returned in 1997. Apple wants every employee to imagine themselves in the creative process at Apple; regardless if they are in finance, Human Resources, or on a product development team. Everyone is expected to have a creative thinking and innovative solutions mindset. The culture at Apple begins with the people and is reinforced through the innovative approaches and strategies of the company. Apple remains focused on innovation and creativity while keeping a simple focus on the core products. The strategy of Apple is quite simple, to push the boundaries in all areas such as industrial engineering, silicon engineering, wireless engineering, and specialized engineering in order to provide the most creative and innovative products to consumers around the world.
