Application Software
Application software, also known as an "app", is computer software designed to help the user to perform specific tasks. Application software is contrasted with system software and middleware, which manage and integrate a computer's capabilities, but typically do not directly apply them in the performance of tasks that benefit the user. The system software serves the application, which in turn serves the user. Application software is usually designed for end users and most are user friendly. Application software applies the power of a particular computing platform or system software to a particular purpose. Personal software
Personal software comes in a wide variety of software. Personal fitness, cooking , language education and tax preparation are a few. Personal software is similar to specialty software, but usually more generalized in design.
Education/ reference software
Educational software is a software program that is beneficial for both students and teachers alike. To the students, it can precipitate a willingness to learn due to its typical interactive nature and vivid visual content. To the teachers, it is an aiding tool that will help them make their students understand more deeply the concepts of the particular subject that they teach. Put simply, educational software is a technological offering for the highly important institution: the school. (What is Educational Software Technologies, 2009) Educational software’s primary purpose is teaching or self education. It comes in many different styles like courseware designed to be used as a kit for teachers that contain additional material and tutorials. Assessment software is another option used to determine student success by testing students in a virtual environment such as an online class. This allows students to complete examinations using a computer from anywhere in the world, removing the requirement for a traditional location based education.

Productivity software
If you've ever used a word processing program, spreadsheet application or graphic design software, you've had some experience with productivity software. These are the tools people use to create and produce documents, presentations, databases, charts and graphs. It might not be the most exciting software on the market, but for many organizations, corporations and individuals, it's a necessity. (J.Strickland, 2010).
