Mary is shown in a prayerful pose to show that is is asking for forgivenss after sinning. The hands of the sculpture are beautiful and strong and are a very powerful symbol of prayer. Prayer is therefore symbolized as being strong and having the ability to redeem a person (Poeschke, 132).
In his previpous pieces of work, Donatello was involved in coming up beautiful strong bodies. The sculpture of Mary Magdalene could therefore be interpreted as an insight into the life of the artists because at the time he was undertaking this piece of art, he was in a psychologically unstable position (Paoletti & Gary 231).
Gothic Period: Carlo Crivelli’s Art-Crucifixion
Similar to the medieval period, there were many pieces of art produced in the Gothic period. Furthermore, there are several famous artists that were producing art in this period of time. Carlo Crivelli is among the famous artists that were plying their trade in this particular period. Carlo Crivelli was able to produce different pieces of art among them the sculpture of the crucifixion of Jesus (Zuffi, 269). The sculpture is shown in the picture below.
Various things can be drawn from the observation the painting. There is a skull at the base of the cross which is a symbol of Golgotha, the place where Jesus was crucified (Campbell, Campbell & Carlo, 103). Looking at the rest of the body apart from the midsection of the body that is covered with a piece of cloth it is possible to tell that the body of Jesus had been subjected to a lot of physical abuses. A red substance can also be seen at the place of his feet and the place where his palms are attached to the cross which represents the blood that was oozing from his wounds. It is evident that the arms of the painting are so thin to symbolize the aspect of starvation. This painting is able to capture all the sufferings that Jesus had to undergo before finally being mounted on the cross. There are also picture of two women beside the body of Jesus which can be said to be that of his mother Mary and another woman that watched as Jesus painfully died on the cross. The women seem to be looking up at Jesus. This can be interpreted to mean that salvation for mankind came from the moment Jesus was put on the cross and crucified.
The painting of the Crucifixion clearly helps to illustrate the painful process Jesus had to undergo while dying for the sins of mankind. The idea of religion is clearly elaborated here as well.
