In court documents from the Department of Justice's investigation of Pfizer Inc, the company admitted to over $2 million in bribes to government officials in the countries of Bulgaria, Croatia, Kazahkstan, and Russia in order to procure lucrative deals and push for approval or the sale of Pfizer products in these countries. The S.E.C (Securities and Exchange Commission) has specifically filed complaints against Pfizer's China division for one of the aforementioned “points programs” in which physicians could earn “points” for writing more prescriptions which could be redeemed for gifts such as cell phones.
Loss of Market Share:
The expiration of Pfizer's patent on Lipitor resulted in Pfizer's loss of market exclusivity for the heart disease and cholesterol medication which in turn paved the way for less expensive generic versions of the drug to cut into Pfizer's sales. Within a month of the new generic medications hitting the open market, Lipitor's market share had fallen from market exclusivity to controlling just 37% of sales. With Lipitor sales making up about 16% of Pfizer's annual revenue (about $11 billion in sales), Pfizer fought to hold onto those sales by offering discounts to patients, but it was not enough to fend off competitors. As a result, quarterly profits were down 14% immediately following the loss of the Lipitor patent and with no new medications on the horizon, market share will probably not return to their previous levels anytime in the near future.
