Fashion for love & life
Badgley Mischka beginnings
Badgley Mischka is brand created by two designers who formed a partnership to create a line of women’s evening gowns. Not only is this partnership base on their love for passion but also on their love for each other. James Mischka and Mark Badgley are life partners as well as in business. James Mischka was born in Burlington, Wisconsin on December 23, 1960. Mischka was raised by his homemaker mother, Judith and sales executive father, Carl. Mischka was the eldest of three boys. First, he attended Rice University in Texas for a biomedical engineering degree. He later switched to an ...view middle of the document...
Badgley told Janice Min when she profiled the duo for People. "Our philosophy is, 'One zip and you're glamorous’’… "When you get dressed for evening, you shouldn't have to work hard at it."
These two designers have been known to create elegant, ultra–luxurious evening gowns that are red–carpet equipped; they cater to the entertainment’s industry finest. The two designers had no interest in women’s sportswear or any women’s career areas. Their determinations only lead them to mainstream evening gowns. When they first started out they did not have much success, however, by the second time customers and buyers correspondingly were pleased with their styles. Consequently, this emerged into orders from top store such as Saks Fifth Avenue, Neiman Marcus and Barneys New York. Badgley Mischka designs were sewn from a variety of delicate fabrics, often in a subdued metal palette that eventually became their signature.
But they did not stop there; the BM style was so unique they even aged some of their materials on purpose. For instance, Drano and a dry–cleaning fluid were used to take the orange sheen from gold thread, and soaked pearls in a Drano bath to achieve a more antiqued patina. These two designers stand by simple evening suits and dresses that are polished—form-fitting wool jersey, cotton brocade, faille, embroidered lace, silk, and baby bouclé. This creates suits with long fitted jackets and pencil-thin or swingy full short skirts. A versatile wool jersey dress can be perfect for career dressing. The designers are famous for using different combinations of fine and soft draping fabrics such as bouclé and silk, velvet trimmed wool, organza and silk chiffon. Dimension and drama are the end result which keeps their customers loyal. They are famous for fitted, empire, or lowered, waistlines, mixed cocktail dresses, which are often accentuated by off-the-shoulder, décolleté, bowed, lacy, or beaded and above the knee.
All are subtly provocative, feminine, and flirtatious. Bridal gowns with V-backed ivory lace and silk-crêpe dress, or the off-white silk brocade coatdress, with front wrap and jeweled buttons are made to compliment not out shine the wearer. BM’s goal when using such fabrics is to make glamour less mysterious and simple.
