BasketballBasketball is one of the most popular sports watched and played. It was first played in the winter of 1891 in Springfield, Massachusetts. It was not played with a basketball but with a soccer ball and peach baskets instead of a rim. Each time someone made a basket someone had to climb up a ladder and get the ball. Also, there were nine players on a team. Now Basketball is played indoors with two five player teams. The objective of the game is to put the ball through a rim. The two rims are at each end of the court and ten feet above the ground. The pro size courts are 94 feet long and 50 feet wide. Every basket made is worth two points. The other guard must be a good all around player. He must be a good shooter and ball handler and an excellent scorer. The power forwards must be able to shoot from close and do post moves. The center must get rebounds and make small shorts and when on defense his main goal is to block shots and not let any one get lay-ups.All of the time there are two referees during a game of basketball. A ref is a person who calls fouls and wrong doings during the game. When a player fouls a ref tells his number to the score table so they can keep track. Then the team who did not commit the foul passes the ball in from out of bounds. When a team commits five fouls the other team is in one and one. That is where the player who was fouled shoots one shot and if he misses the other players can rebound the ball. If he makes it he gets another shot.Every game is started with a jump ball. The ref throws the ball up in the center of the court and the two best jumpers or the tallest players try to tip the ball to one of their team mates. Then the team that wins the tip tries to score within 24 seconds. Sometimes a team will run a play to try to free up a player to try to shoot the ball or drive it to the basket. The team that loses the tip has to play defense. They have to try to defend their basket. They can try to get the ball by stealing the ball or blocking a shot. A player can dribble the ball, when they pick it up they have to pass or shoot. They have five seconds to make that choice. If he gets the ball back he can start dibbling again. There are four 12 minute quarters. At the half of the game there is a twenty minute break. During play a coach can call a time out to talk to the team about a problem or just to give them a rest. The time out can be a 20 or 60 second time out.The playoffs is where the top teams play to claim the best spot. When there are 10 teams left one team has to win three games out of five to win their series. Then when there are four a team has to win five out of seven games to win their series.
