Dr. Maria Montessori came up with the Montessori Method over 100 years ago. Maria was an Italian educator and physician. She ended up organising the Montessori Method of education for children and, was also the first women to receive a medical degree in 1894. The Montessori Method is in a child-centered educational approach and it’s based on scientific observations from birth to adulthood. Maria based her approach to children on their natural learning tendencies.

In her career as an educator, she traveled around the world teaching courses on early education and founding schools. She was nominated for three Nobel Peace prizes. She died in Holland in 1952. Her legacy will carry on as a leader in early childhood education.
The Method of Montessori education has been proven and tested for over 100 years. It has been successful in many different cultures and countries throughout the world. The Method is centered on the individual child and their needs. The Method was based on studies of children from birth to adulthood. Montessori’s way of education is based on the concept of a child, at any age is naturally wanting to learn. It goes on to prove any child can learn in a supportive environment. The Method values the human spirit, physical, social, emotional, and cognitive aspects of learning.
Needed parts of a Montessori learning program are multi-age groupings because they foster peer learning, set blocks of work time, and guided choice of work activity. The groupings divide the children into appropriate work groups, specific blocks of work time help the children focus. Guided choice of work activity allows the children to choose what they will do, but the teacher is still supervising. Special work materials are also needed, but they have to be approved as real Montessori materials. They are arranged in a specific way for learning. The materials are also put into an environment made for learning.
In the Montessori Method the teacher, child, and environment make a learning triangle. They all can’t function unless all three are present and participate in the learning process. The teacher is there to supervise and encourage but doesn’t always tell the child exactly how to learn. The classroom is set up by the teacher to encourage freedom, order, and independence. The child choices individually how the environment will help them to learn. The teacher helps when help or guidance is needed.
Groups of children in the Montessori classroom of different ages is a key aspect of this Method of learning. Younger children learn from the older children because, the older children already know the concept. By the older children teaching the concept, they reinforce the concept in themselves.
