An important character in the novel is the time traveler. He travels thousands of years into the future and meets a whole new race of creatures. The time traveler is bold and curious. He tries out his time travel machine on his own and risks his life. He explores the future of the world. Eventually, he makes it back from his first adventure and is able to tell his story. However, he goes back into the future and has not returned after several years. A small character in the story is Weena. Weena is one of the white Eloi and is friends with the time traveler. The time traveler saved Weena from drowning, which created their friendship. Weena is along with the time traveler for many of his adventures.
The conflict in the story is man versus man. The Morlocks, who are believed to be a future descendent of man, have taken the time traveler’s machine, and he is unable to return to his own time. He tries desperately to find it but cannot. He also realizes that the Morlocks are dangerous and want to kill anyone they see.
The conflict is resolved when the Morlocks trap the time traveler and Weena in the forest. The time traveler starts a fire to help protect them. The pair get away and return to the home of the Eloi. When they get back, the time traveler sees his machine but realizes the Morlocks are trying to trap him again. However, he gets on his machine and travels before the Morlcoks can kill him.
An obvious theme in the story is time travel. The whole story is based around it. At the beginning of the novel, the traveler explains the concept of the fourth dimension and how to time travel. Another theme is the future of mankind. The time traveler believes that the Eloi and Morlocks are the future of humans. However, our future seems to be a dangerous and war-filled time. It reminds us that we must come together if we are to last a long time as a species.
I found this book to be mediocre. It was one of my least favorite books from the list as of now. The story was interesting, but I was waiting for something more to happen with time machine. Also, there were only a few characters that we actually met in the novel. This made the story less interesting.
