Técnicas de transición de “IPvX a IPvY” (IPv6 a IPv4)
Hay definido tres principales técnicas de transición. La primera (1) es la de doble pila de protocolos, un enfoque muy sencillo de implementar que requiere que los hosts y los routers soporten ambas versiones de IP y, por tanto, servicios y aplicaciones tanto IPv4 como IPv6. En estos momentos, este enfoque de doble pila es un mecanismo fundamental para introducir IPv6 en las arquitecturas IPv4 actuales y se prevé que siga siendo muy utilizado durante el próximo futuro. Para aquellos casos en que haya insuficientes direcciones IPv4 se ha definido una combinación del modelo de conversión y de doble pila de protocolos, conocido como DSTM (Dual Stack Transition Mechanism). “Shipworm”, por su parte, está específicamente diseñado para efectuar tunneling a través de IPv4 Network Address Translators. En los estadios finales de la transición, también se emplearán los túneles para interconectar las nubes IPv4 residuales a través de la infraestructura IPv6. La última técnica usa un mecanismo de traducción o conversión de protocolos, necesario cuando cuando un host sólo IPv6 ha de comunicar con un host IPv4. La cabecera IP ha de ser convertida y puede requerir un pool de direcciones IPv4 para proporcionar un alias al host IPv6 durante la comunicación; de hecho tal conversión hereda la mayoría de los problemas de IPv4 Network Address Translators. También se dispone de ALG (Application-Level Gateways) que conviertan direcciones IP embebidas, recomputación de checksum, etc. SIIT (Stateless IP/ICMP Translation) y NAT-PT (Network Address Translation–Protocol Translation) son técnicas de conversión asociadas. Como las técnicas de tunneling, la conversión se puede implementar en los routers y hosts de extremo.

En el mundo apenas 1 por ciento del tráfico de internet es sobre IPv6. Esperan que durante el Día del Lanzamiento Mundial del IPv6 el tráfico de internet en el nuevo protocolo se incremente por arriba del 10 por ciento. En México de las 500 organizaciones registradas por Nic México con IPv4, apenas 27 solicitaron asignación de IPv6. De las 27 organizaciones que solicitaron direcciones IPv6 en México, hasta el momento sólo 13 ya lo están utilizando.
