Business Law Assignment

896 words - 4 pages

When I first started researching a topic to write about I was lost. I’m not use to looking up regulations and the different agencies that impose them. I had no idea that there were so many agencies, let alone rules and regulations that were proposed and/or passed every year. So I knew that it would be best for me to explore an area that I was familiar with, or knew a little bit about. I chose to look at the most recent regulations of The ATF, also known as the Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms. The proposed regulation that I want to look at is referred to as the Implementation of the USA PATRIOT Improvement and Reauthorization Act of 2005 Regarding Trafficking in Contraband Cigarettes or ...view middle of the document...

This regulation really surprised me. I didn’t know that there were regulations on shipping tobacco, smokeless or not. I didn’t know there was a need to regulate in this area. When I was an undergrad student I knew people who would “traffic” cigarettes and alcohol back to their university which was is a dry county. I’m sure they didn’t traffic the excess amount of 10,000 cigarettes but still they were profiting from something that was technically illegal in their city. If I were to post a comment on this regulation I would question the consequences of violating the CCTA. What would be the minimum punishment? Maximum punishment? Are you able to get a misdemeanor? Would violating this regulation be a federal offense? Yes they are trying to amend the regulation but these are things I would like to know. And it is also something I think people like the college students I mentioned aren’t aware of. By posting this comment I would hope to accomplish one things. I feel the public deserves to know what punishment will be set into place. Everyone knows if you kill someone you will be serving a good amount of time. I would hope they would publically announce the amendment and the change that includes smokeless tobacco. According to the website all coments must be submitted by October 26, 2010. Written comments must be postmarked and electronic comments must be submitted on or before October 26, 2010.
