CAREERS IN PSYCHOLOGY

Health psychology is a specialty area that focuses on how biological, social and psychological factors influence health and illness. Health psychologist works to understand the relation of behavior and attitude to physical health. They study the effect of stress on health problem in order to educate people about stress reduction techniques and teaching people how to avoid unhealthy behaviors. They also help and guide their patient to cope with pain or illness and how to get them to seek treatment for medical conditions.

Salaries for health psychologists typically depend on the location, work setting, educational background and job experience. According to the American Psychological Association (APA), psychology professionals make a median yearly salary of $88,300. The 10% of psychology professionals in the lowest pay bracket earn less than $52,560 per year, while those in the highest pay bracket earn approximately $137,530 per year.
Health psychology encompasses a wide range of issues, from chronic pain to terminal illness with the goals of helping people improve their quality of life and addressing specific health issues. In clinical and medical settings, health psychologists work with people suffering from mental disorders or psychological distress. Health psychologists also often conduct behavioral assessments, clinical interviews and personality tests. Other tasks often involve participating in interventions with individuals or groups and educating people about stress reduction techniques, offering smoking cessation tips and teaching people how to avoid unhealthy behaviors.
Licensed health psychologists, especially clinical psychologists, often work in private practice. Their own offices and are able to establish their own work schedule to accommodate the schedules of their clients.
