Impact of Health Information Technology

Information systems have much to offer in managing healthcare costs and in improving the quality of care. Health Information Technology creates a system for the collection and processing of data from various sources, and using the information for policy making and management of health services. Health information technology has the potential to enable better care for patients, and to help clinicians achieve continual improvements in the quality of care in primary care settings. It is considered the fourth element of information system; procedures are the rules, descriptions and instructions for how things are done. In computer-based information systems, procedures are frequently covered in instruction or user manuals that describe how to use the hardware, software and data. Fourth, Information technology is used for storing, protecting, processing, securing, transmitting, receiving, and retrieving information. Information technology helps in project management systems as well. Firstly, planning is done, then the data is collected, sorted and processed, and finally, results are generated. It helps managers, and workers to inquire about a particular problem, conceive its complexity, and generate new products and services; thereby, improving their productivity and output. Fifth, communication technology is important to system that involves more than one piece of hardware to function, communication or connectivity is a necessity. This is, in part, because parts of it are covered under hardware. The components that allow one computer to communicate with another are hardware and are controlled by software. If communication between people is included in this element, though, it is an important element. Data, people, processes, information technology, and communication technology elements are indispensable to produce a successful information system, because these heaths IT tools can improve providers’ decision-making processes as it relates to the needs of special populations, facilitate quality improvement reporting, and increase access to a broader range of quality health care services.
These elements interact to each other in order to complete the technical process of a well-functioning health information system.
