1. Which main management theories or themes do you think were applied in the case?
The main theme that the management in this case runs under would be that of a strong but unhealthy work culture. Mr Drake appears to be a highly political figure within the company as he strongly dismisses Shelby’s innovations; this shows that is it also not an adaptive or supportive culture. Themes of being stability orientated are also present as it appears that the current management are too entrenched with existing values that they are inept to change, this is also displayed through the hierarchal management within the organisation where there is no two way communication instead “principal communication is down the line”.

3. If you could pick one idea from the discussion, what did you find most valuable for your learning?
I think the discussion made me apprehend the importance and value of good communication, as the consequences due to the lack of it is clear with the failure of Shelby’s innovation to create a more interactive environment; implementing change and communication go hand in hand with one another, although Shelby had good intentions they were unable to go into fruition as firstly he did not consult upper management in order to get the appropriate feedback needed and he also did not inform those working below him (besides Stanley) of his ideas ; hence the most important lesson here is that communication is vital and that you can’t create and expect others to follow your values and implementations if you don't follow them yourself.
Not only did the case study help but the actual group work also proved of value to my learning as it wouldn't of happened if our team members weren’t continually communicating to each other on what needs to be done, our current progress and getting ideas across to one another.
4. How would you evaluate your own contribution towards the discussion of the case study?
I believe that I made a fair contribution towards the discussion as I participated in both the online forum and face-to-face discussions. I felt that I expressed my opinions freely and listened actively while others express theirs, if their perspectives differed from mine I would raise questions instead of disagreeing with them so that I was able to get a better understanding of where they were coming from and also it’s good to look at things in another light.
