Cause and Effect: The Causes of Domestic Violence
You’re heading home from work late in the evening while picturing the warm embrace you will receive when you arrive, but for many this is not the case. Thousands upon thousands of adults go home every night afraid. To them, it is not a matter of simply going home; it is the fear that they may not survive through the night. “Domestic violence is the third largest cause of homelessness in the country” (“Domestic Violence: Statistics & Facts”). Once the victim accepts the idea that they cannot leave, the aggressor now has full reign over their victim. Furthermore, the life of the abused is now in danger. The article “MYTHS AND FACTS” states at least three women are murdered daily as a result of domestic violence. On the contrary, many ask why the victim did not flee as soon the possibility presented itself. Often, the victim may attempt to leave up to eight times before finally ending the relationship (“MYTHS”).
A study conducted by the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence’s entitled “Domestic Violence and Substance Abuse”, shows that 61 percent of abusers were suffering from some form of substance abuse at the time of the attacks. Certainly, not all who have struggled with substance abuse have pulverized their partner but being under the influence of these substances can definitely increase the risk. What may have started out as a petty argument has the potential to turn volatile in a matter of moments. In addition, the use of drugs and alcohol can cause a strain between couples, making everyone a target for abuse in the household.
Approximately three million children witness domestic violence in their homes. Of course, the early exposure to such harshness can cause issues to take shape inside the child.
