Causes and solutions of begging in Bangladesh: A case basis study in Chittagong.
This study investigated the causes and consequences of street begging in Chittagong, Bangladesh. Descriptive survey design was adopted for the study. A sample of 50 beggars (30 male, 15 female and 5 children) were selected through the random sampling technique for the study. Data were collected by means of an in depth structure interview designed by researchers. Simple percentages were used for analyzing the data the results showed that respondents indicated homelessness (95%), poverty (86.3%) and rejection by family harsh weather (90.2%), as the worst consequence of begging. Researchers have discovered that casual and consequential correlation exists between begging, homeless, poverty, and mental illness, inadequate access to housing, income, and health support services .opined that the effectiveness of any remedial action depends on tackling the casual factors. Some of the factors associated with begging are Poverty, Homelessness, Break Down of the Family System, Mental illness and Drugs, Unemployment etc.
In Bangladesh, a number of causes can be held responsible directly for still healing this social problem. The growing incidence and influx of beggars in major cities in Bangladesh like Dhaka, Chittagong, Khulna, Sylhet, Rajshahi has turned into into a matter of great concern for the government and the citizens of Bangladesh. Particularly in Chittagong, the number of beggers is increasing at an alarming rate.
The Nature of Begging in Chittagong
In Bangladesh , poverty stricken people from less developed regions tends to move to the industrially developed cities like Dhaka, Chittagong, Narayanganj in search of a better way to earn their livelihood but most of them failed to find a suitable job to manage their family properly and therefore passed their days through tough hardship. As a result Some of these people bound to engage themselves into begging. In Chittagong beggars are usually seen sitting or standing individually or in a group at the footpaths of the busy roads. Some of the beggars are seen to form a gang and utter some verses loudly from the holy Quran to draw the attention of the passersby . The gangs usually collect the proceeds from them. Some beggars print illegitimate materials or posters related to their physical disabilities, which were found to be either disbanded or non-existent . sometimes beggars use posters or envelopes with pictures of terminally ill people to solicit for money meant for their personal use. Self-acclaimed healers of mental patients are fond of using them to beg for money from unsuspecting members of the public while their ‘masters’ watch from a hidden place.
Causes of Begging in Chittagong
