After Kathleen’s release from prison, Manson’s mother tried to send him to a foster home in 1947, but was denied by the courts and he was sent to the Gibault School For Boys in Terre Haute, Indiana.
At the tender age of fourteen, in 1948, Manson committed his first know crime, the burglary of a grocery store and was sent to a juvenile detention center. Not too long after being entered into the detention center, Manson escaped and committed two armed robberies. Apprehended again by police, Manson was sent to the Indiana School for Boys in Plainfield, where he spent the next three years, except for brief periods of freedom during eighteen attempted escapes. After three years in Plainfield, Indiana School for Boys, Manson escaped again and headed West in a stolen car, burglarizing 15-20 gas stations along the way. Manson was eventually caught in Utah and sent to the National Training School for Boys in Washington, D.C. At this time Manson saw a Psychiatrist whom called Manson a “Slick†but “Extremely Sensitive†boy. While in the National Training School for Boys in 1952, Manson Sodomized a boy while holding a razor to the boy’s throat. After this lode act, Manson was transferred to the Federal Reformatory in Pittsburg, Virginia. Later in 1952 Manson was transferred yet again to a more secure Reformatory in Chillicothe, Ohio.
Manson tried to start a new chapter in his life in 1955 when he met and married a seventeen year old girl named Rosalie Willis, a waitress from Wheeling Ohio. Manson and Rosalie had one child whom they named Charles Manson Jr. and he was born in 1955. At this time Manson was worked as a parking lot attendant and a busboy, but also stole cars. In October 1955 Charles was again caught for auto theft and sentenced to five years’ probation. Unfortunately, in 1956 Manson violated the terms of his 1955 probation and was sentence to three years imprisonment in San Pedro, California. After completing two of the three years of imprisonment, Manson and his wife divorced and his now ex-wife retained custody of their son Charles Jr. In 1958 Manson was released on Parole, but became a pimp in Southern California. Manson had hit a downward spiral in his life and in 1959 was arrested again for forging a treasury check and was given a ten year suspended sentence.
In January 1959, Charles, now 26, marries again to a nineteen year old named Leona ‘Candy’ Stevens. Together ‘Candy’ and Charles father a child together and named him Charles Luther Manson. In April 1960, Charles was indicted on Federal Mann Act charges and Charles was arrested in Laredo and brought back to California where he was ordered to sever the ten year sentence that has been suspended in 1959. In 1961 Charles was transferred to a Federal Penitentiary in McNeil Island, Washington, It was here that he saw a prison Psychiatrist who said that Charles had “Deep-Seated Personality Problemsâ€.
