They started to form an alliance with the remaining Korean states after the Tang started to meddle in their affairs.

Minamoto Yoritomo created the, bakufu, a more centralized government lead by a powerful military leader known as a shogun who attempted to increase the powers of the central government. The shogunate system was based on an emperor who was the titular authority while the shogun exercised actual power. It worked very effectively and helped when the Mongols attempted to assert their hegemony throughout all of Asia. Japan refused the demand of tribute from Emperor Khubilai Khan, the refusal lead to an invasion of more than 30,000 troops. Weather conditions made the Mongols retreat until 1281, after the Japanese contained them for two months a massive typhoon destroyed the entire fleet of Mongols. After this invasion they did not face another one until American forces in 1945. A coalition of powerful clans overthrew the Kamakura shogunate in 1333. The daimyo controlled vast landed estates that owned no taxes to the government or to the court in Kyoto. The disintegration of the shogunate and the virtual destruction of Kyoto were due to a civil conflict called the Onin war.
During the Kamakura period trade and manufacturing began to develop more rapidly. During the eleventh foreign trade with Korea and China began. The imported silk, porcelain, books, and copper cash for their raw materials, paintings, and swords. All peasants were not equal economically or socially. There was no contradiction in worshipping both Buddha and their local nature gods. Pure Land sect and Zen were the most influential Buddhist sects. Popular among the common people was the Pure Land sect, because it taught that devotion alone could lead to enlightenment and release. Satori was a Zen teaching that stressed there were many ways to achieve enlightenment; some also believed it could be done suddenly. Zazen was the belief that enlightenment could only come through studying the scriptures and arduous self-discipline. The Japanese adopted the Chinese written language for writing initially. Japanese pronunciations were given to Chinese characters in some cases. Creating a mood was the aim of a Japanese poet. “Linked verse”, commonly known as Haiku, was the most popular form of Japanese poetry; it is composed of seventeen syllables divided into lines of five, seven, and five syllables. Aristocratic women used their poetry in poetic exchanges as the only way to attract their prospective lover since they were isolated from all contact with men outside their immediate family.
