Know the main stages of child and young person development
1.1 Development of children is separated into areas of development. These areas are:
• Physical – gross motor skills, fine motor skills, general coordination, hand-eye coordination

• Communication and development – using language, problem solving, decision making, using skills in different ways, developing creative and imaginative skills

• Social, emotional and behavioural – taking turns, developing social skills, cooperating with others, learning about feelings of others, developing self-esteem and self-expression

They will cry when they are hungry and may try to suck things that are close to their mouth to display signs of hunger. Babies will enjoy listening to songs and people around them. This stimulation will enable them to begin to speak. Most children will attempt speech by around a year old. In their second year they will be able to put a few words together. Their range of vocabulary will develop so that by the age of two most children will know around 200 words. Speech and language will develop enough to enable the child to put together short sentences in their third year.

Social, Emotional and Behavioural
The first three years of a childs life may be challenging when we look at their social, emotional and behavioural development. As babies children depend on their parents for survival. Children will form strong attachments and will begin to discover their own identity as they develop. At this age children don’t understand the world around them and can easily become frustrated and have tantrums.

3-7 Years

Physical
A childs development will be more coordinated at this age and their confidence will develop. They will be able to explore new skills and be able to demonstrate more control over fine motor skills which will help with drawing.

Communication and Intellectual
These years of a childs life will see their confidence grow. Children will be able to communicate effectively with others. At the beginning of this stage children will be able to understand short simple instructions and will benefit from communication at eye level. As well as language their reading and writing skills will develop. Although they will have gained some independence they will still seek adult approval.

Social, Emotional and behavioural
Children will begin forming friendships and learning through imaginative and role play. Boundaries are important at this age for children to understand acceptable behaviour. They will feel more independent and may benefit from some small responsibilities at school as well as at home. Early in this stage boys and girls will play together comfortably but as they near the end they may tend to stick to same gender friendships.

7-12 years

Physical
Between the ages of 7-12 children will begin to have hobbies and interests of their own. This will help them to develop in certain areas – sports or music for example. Some children may begin to show signs of puberty as they approach the teenage years.

Communication and Intellectual
Children will now be fluent in their language and will have developed their reading and writing skills. They will develop their own thoughts and be able to discuss their ideas.

Social, Emotional and behavioural
Childrens friendships will be important to them and they may have developed strong groups of friends, they may have a few friends of the opposite gender but will mostly be more comfortable with their same gender groups until they go through puberty. Although they
