There are many diseases that could attack our younger generation. Some of these diseases we can control and some we cannot. Child obesity has become a large issue in the United States. According to statistics, “between 5 to 25 percent of children and teenagers in the United States are obese” (Dietz, 1983, p. 676). More and more of our children are being faced with obesity every day. They are starting to call it a public health threat. “The increasing prevalence of childhood obesity through the United States has led policy makers to rank it a critical health threat for the 21st century.” (Koplan and Dietz, 1999; ...view middle of the document...
Most parents that I have seen now days are starting to cut back on the sodas they give to their children and it help in my ways.
There are many things that the world could be doing to help the younger generation. Children are not going to eat healthy is they don’t know how or are not made to. Parents need to set aside time for their children. . Children need to eat healthy meals every day. Parents are working more in the 21st century, so that makes it where they do not want to cook at home for their families. They want to get something fast, so they choose to go out to eat. We are putting fat in our children’s bodies just because we don’t have the time or the want too. In most fast food places they are not serving anything healthy more like hamburgers and fries. This is not a healthy meal for an adult, must less a child. We need to sit down with our children to explain what is healthy and what is not. When we go to the grocery store we could not by the things that are unhealthy. (Guthrie JF, Lin BH, Frazao E.)
I think the leading cause of child obesity is the lack of authority on the child’s exercise. Since parents are working more, children can do whatever they want at home. They also are not going to get active if we do not stand behind them and push. A lot of these children spend hours in front of the TV (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) .While they need to be up and active. Child should be force to be outside or at lease up and active for a few hours a day. “Obesity prevention involves maintaining energy balance at a healthy weight while protecting overall health, growth and development, and nutritional status”. (Jeffrey P. Koplan (2005). p 90) This younger generation has more electronics to play with than what children did 30 yrs. ago. They get to play on them instead of being outside in the sun, getting their exercise. Letting children sit inside does not let their heart pump like they should be pumping. They need to get their hearts pumping so they can burn the calories that they eat.
Genetics also play a role in how the adults have a lot to do with children being obesity. The genes we get from our parent have different ways of helping them become obesity. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said, “genes regulate how our bodies capture, store, and release energy from food.” Some of us have more energy, so our bodies have more of a chance to burn calories. Then there are people that do not have the urge to eat very much. Most of the time our bodies are lacking something, so we have to train the children to steer a different way of going about their lives. Everyone can fight the genes in their bodies but the younger genteration needs to be taught how to do this.
We do not want our child to have health problems but we continue to let them decided their own fate. Adults need to open their eyes and see how important this issue is. “In children, energy expenditure constitutes the calories used for basal...
