Everyone from infant to adult have a different attitude towards life and death. We all are aware of death and we know it will eventually come to us all. Death cannot be prevented. Death is an inevitable fact of life. Each individual react to death in their own way which differs from one individual to another according to their age and upbringing. People grieve at any age. The loss of something important to them will follow them throughout their life (Powers, 2007). There are different feeling of everyone towards death and life. As our essay is about a 10-year-old child, it mainly focuses on the concrete operational stage, which is characterized by the ability of using logical and coherent actions in thinking and solving problems. They understand the concepts of permanence and conservation by learning that volume, weight, and numbers may remain constant despite changes in outward appearance. These children should be able to build on past experiences, using them to explain why some things happen (Huitt & Hummel, 2003).

In terms of the psychosocial development Erik Erickson (1959-1980) has classified the 10-year-old child to a stage of industry versus inferiority. During this stage, school and social interaction plays an important role. The child begins to develop a sense of pride in their accomplishments and abilities. On this stage, a child becomes capable of performing increasingly complex task which make them strive to master new skills. While failing to do so, they get a feeling of inferiority and doubt their ability to be successful (Barkway, 2009).

Children of this age often participate in discussion of social and world problems. They are mostly interested in material possession, health, and happiness for self and others and also their personal improvement. This implies on how they might react to a parent’s death because they are already building up an attachment and belongingness with them. Children of this age hold their tears but they tend to cry when their feelings get hurt whether by loss of their toys or with the loss of a loved one (Wisconsin Child Welfare training system, 2007). Grief in response to death is a personal reaction to the loss of a particular person varies. Each child’s personality and experience is unique to themselves and following bereavement each young person will respond in his or her individual way (Penny, 2007).

At the age of 10, children have acquired a mature understanding of death but often get confused of what emotions to show. By this age, they will know that death is a permanent state and that it cannot be reversed. They also believe the fact that once you have died, your body is no longer able to function and it will eventually happen to everyone at some time and it will happen to them as well at some time or some age. This adult understanding can be accompanied by adult-like responses such as feeling a sense of responsibility, feeling different, being protective of others who have been affected, thinking certain emotions are childish or that they must put up...
