How does Charles Dickens make his Philanthropic message clear using the character of Scrooge in the novella “A Christmas Carolâ€
A philanthropist is a person who gives charity and goodwill to fellowmen in an active effort to promote welfare and to care for the less fortunate. Bill Gates is an example to a philanthropist because he gives huge amounts to charity to cure diseases. Charles Dickens is a philanthropist because in the novella “A Christmas Carol†he shows that Mr. Scrooge is a greedy character everyone fears.
The narrator’s tone is a bit angry at the beginning of the novella because Marley was dead. The narrator seemed quite interested about what was going on. I think the reader must have thought that the story will be about murders. Lots of action in the book because it starts with Marley was dead. The title of the play is “A Christmas Carol†and it starts with a person ...view middle of the document...
No one talks to him because he doesn’t want to talk to anyone he keeps with himself to himself because while he was younger he had no one to talk to so I think he got used to being alone that now he doesn’t want to change. So he is interested in himself and his business. He is very harsh on his employee. He has a small fire and his employee has a even smaller fire which is one coal.
Scrooge is less selfish because he looks back at his Christmas past and sees how he has missed out in those times and he changes his views on Christmas a little bit. His selfishness was lost when he saw how he lost his love Belle over money and realized how much happiness that he has lost over money. He realized money isn’t everything. Family is what matters he realizes this after seeing bob crachits house. This also makes the reader sympathetic toward Scrooge because they have seen how his childhood was and how he loved ones left him.
Scrooge’s motivations change because he has seen his past and want to change his future. His attitudes change because he thinks he is going to die so he wants to make up for his time he has missed before and he realizes that he is lonely because he chose money over his love. So he says “I will live in the past the present and the futureâ€. He helps save Tiny Tim’s life and he is like a second father to Tiny Tim
Scrooge’s nephew is a total opposite to him. Scrooge is rich nephew poor, nephew is into celebrations scrooge isn’t. Scrooge doesn’t see how Fred is poor and happy. Fred still respects his uncle in his own ways. In the end scrooge turns to Fred to apologize for his behavior before for not treating him like family and blaming him for his sister’s death.
Charles Dickens shows how scrooge treats people which were true in his times. This was how the rich people treated the poor people no respect didn’t care if they suffer or not just wanted money. Charles dickens knows how it feels to be treated poorly because in his times he was poor and then became to be a famous writer. Charles dickens lived in a poor family so he had to leave education and help his parents earn enough money to pass by working in a factory.
