Vertebrates have a closed circulatory system. Closed circulatory systems have the blood closed at all times within vessels of different size and wall thickness. In this type of system, blood is pumped by a heart through vessels, and does not normally fill body cavities. Hemoglobin causes vertebrate blood to turn red in the presence of oxygen; but more importantly hemoglobin molecules in blood cells transport oxygen. The human closed circulatory system is sometimes called the cardiovascular system. This closed system is what helps humans living on land.The circulatory system assists with homeostasis by transporting oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste products, immune components, and hormones. Contraction of the ventricle forces blood from the heart through an artery. The heart muscle is composed of cardiac muscle cells.The circulatory system functions in the delivery of oxygen, nutrient molecules, and hormones and the removal of carbon dioxide, ammonia and other metabolic wastes. Capillaries are the points of exchange between the blood and surrounding tissues. Materials cross in and out of the capillaries by passing through or between the cells that line the capillary. Hemoglobin molecules in blood cells transport oxygen.Circulation of the blood moves blood to a site or sites where it can be oxygenated, and where wastes can be disposed. Circulation then brings newly oxygenated blood to the tissues of the body. As oxygen and other chemicals diffuse out of the blood cells and into the fluid surrounding the cells of the body's tissues, waste produces diffuse into the blood cells to be carried away. Blood circulates through organs such as the liver and kidneys where wastes are removed, and back to the lungs for a fresh dose of oxygen. And then the process repeats itself. This process of circulation is necessary for continued life of the cells, tissues and even of the whole organisms.The circulatory system carries digested food substances to the cells of the body. These nutrients enter the bloodstream by passing through the walls of the small intestine into the capillaries. The blood then carries most of the nutrients to the liver. The liver removes certain nutrients from the blood and stores them. It later releases the nutrients into the blood when the body needs them. The liver also changes some nutrients into substances needed by the body. Blood leaving the liver contains nutrients that the cells use in the production of energy, enzymes, and new building materials for the body.
