Expressions of empathy can gain feelings of trust between nurse and client, creating a strong rapport that develops the basis of a therapeutic relationship. To effectively display attributes of empathy, one must have the aesthetics to perceive another's current feelings, communicate the understanding and be non-judgemental. It is essential to establish a mutual trust and practice self-disclosure appropriately. To be able to explain the concept of empathy to another person, one must first understand its meaning. Merriam-Webster (2014) defines empathy as 'the feeling that you understand and share another person's experiences and emotions'. If a nurse has the ability to connect with a client using verbal and non verbal communication while displaying active listening, they will go far in gaining a person's trust. Empathy can be conveyed by direct and specific statements which indicate an understanding of a clients experience (Funnell, Koutoukidis and Lawrence 2005, pp. 450). Equally the power of a simple appropriate touch can resonate a sense of sincere caring and compassion. Similarly, whilst actively listening to a client takes more than just hearing, it is the ability to absorb both verbal and non verbal signs (Davis 2009, p. 76-79). For example, analysing facial expressions and body language. Besides being able to communicate an understanding of empathy one must acquire a non subjective approach.
Attitudes, values and beliefs are a major part of who people are as a whole. Demonstrating the capability to maintain a non-judgemental attitude towards the ideas, views, situations and feelings of others (Funnell, Koutoukidis and Lawrence 2005, pp. 450) is what comprises a therapeutic communication. Therefore when a nurse is building a positive rapport with the client, it is likely that the client will trust the nurse enough to disclose valuable information in regard to their personal health.
Interpretations of empathy cultivate feelings of assurance. Trust is having the confidence that another person will respect another's rights and act responsibly toward them in an accountable way (Funnell, Koutoukidis and Lawrence 2005, pp. 450). Empathy is a multifaceted term comprising largely on trust, therefore it is important to remember that 'empathy is central to a therapeutic nurse-patient relationship (Hsiao et al, 2013). Ultimately, reciprocal trust is desired for self disclosure and reflecting feelings.
Self revelation can speak volumes when a nurse is comforting a client. The amount of disclosure will depend on rapport between nurse and client. Such admissions are reassuring as it validates the clients...
