Communication Essay

528 words - 3 pages

There are many different types of communication styles each person has a unique personality and communication style which plays a basic role in their personality perspectives. In the article “but what do you mean?” by Deborah Tannen the author argues that there is no right or wrong way to talk. Whereas in the article “Doublespeak” by William Lutz he argues that communication is carefully designed and constructed to mislead and corrupt our thoughts. However I agree with Tanner because men and women talk differently.
One of the most common reasons is that your communication style is different than the other person’s communication style. Tannen expresses” Unfortunately women and men often have different ...view middle of the document...

Tannen also goes on to explain how “many of the conversational rituals common among women are designed to take the others feelings into account, while many of the conversational rituals common among men are designed to maintain the one-up position or at least avoid appearing ones down” (para 2). For many of us our natural tendency in communicating is to use our own style because it is what comes naturally and automatically to us.
The success of any relationship relies on the ability to communicate well. Communication is important in all relationships as it allows us to share our interest, concerns and support for each other. Effective communication is based on the way we talk and listen, how we respond as well as our body language. All too often the signals we send are not those we intend to send. Tannen explains “women are often told they apologizes too much. The reason they’re told to stop doing that is that to many men, apologizing seems synonymous with putting oneself down”(para 4). For example my sister’s boyfriend will come home from work and leave his shoes in the middle of the floor and my sister will trip over them and instead of him apologizing he will say my bad. Whereas if my sister will leave her shoes in the middle of the floor and she will say I’m sorry meaning she will try not to do it again. The way people communicate is all in how we perceive and interrupt the meaning of the word.
On the other hand for women the language of communication is primary a language of rapport. Women do a better job initiating private conversation between each other in less crowed environments. Females are more focused on negotiating relationships and comparing them to others.
