Why do directors choose to stay faithful to or depart from a text when they are producing a film? Many directors choose to either alter or maintain literary elements such as characters, plot, and resolution from a text. The presence or lack of these specific features affects the audience. For instance, in the story “The Monkey’s Paw”, a classic short horror story written by W.W. Jacobs, and its accompanying film, the similarities and differences in the characters, plot, and resolution have an effect on the readers and viewers.

Although the story “The Monkey’s Paw” and its video have character differences, they certainly have similarities. For instance, they resemble each other in the sense of plot. As a result, the level of suspense in both is the same. In the story, the complications leading up to the climax include Mr. White’s first two wishes: (1) for money and (2) for his son to come back to life. The suspense from this is clearly shown soon before the turning point of the story, when his son is at the door: “Then he turned and fled swiftly back to his room, and closed the door behind him. A third knock sounded through the house” (Elements of Literature 98). In a similar way, in the film, Mr. and Mrs. White listen to their son approaching the house. Additionally, Mr. White’s first two wishes are identical in the text and in the motion picture. Since the rising action in the film and the text is the same, the level of suspense experienced by the audience is, too. This suspense in both the film and the story shows that the director may have kept the plot the same to sustain the author’s fearful tone in the text.
