ConflictI know this may seem like an elementary concept, but it is the reason for the scenario and for the class. It is not just another concept; it is “the concept”. | There are many conflicts that we can see in the scenario of Coastal County Clerk of Court. We see the conflict between the management styles of the former Clerk, Art Brewer, Stan Accord, the new Clerk, and Dennis Munger, the aspiring Clerk. Through the scenario there is a difference in how elderly employees ...view middle of the document...
Dennis Munger wants the freedom to come and go when as needed when it comes to taking care of his elderly parents. The other three questions are also answered but I choose topic goals for this scenario. | “The key question when looking at a conflict is “What does each person want? Topic, or content, goals emerge as different ideas about what to do, what decisions to make, where to go, how to allocate resources, or other externally objectifiable issues.”(Wilmot & Hacker, 2007, ch. 3.) | In my above example of conflict all I wanted was to be able to not be scheduled on Sunday mornings so I could serve and worship in my local church. My superior wanted to have the power over me to say that I had to work that time frame or I would be fired. I believe that topic goals are the main reason for many conflicts. An individual in an organization WANTS something and they are not receiving that thing, and therefore conflict comes into the picture. |
What is Power? | The scenario presents a classic case for struggle of power. The new clerk Stan Accord was in the position with all the power. He came in and had a new agenda and a new idea of managing his employees. He brought change, which is often times very difficult to an organization, and demanded his people follow his new direction. Dennis Munger wanted the very position that Accord had and was disappointed that he did not have the power to come and go as he used to in order to take care of his elderly parents. Power puts an individual in the position to make decisions for other people. The power that Stan had eventually led him to fire many people, Dennis being one of them. | “Just as energy is a fundamental concept in physics, power is a fundamental concept in conflict theory. In interpersonal and all other conflicts, perceptions of power are at the heart of any analysis.”(Wilmot & Hacker, 2007, ch. 4.) | Power, in my opinion, is the cause for many conflicts. The struggle for power and the issue of pride can be found at the root of many conflicts. I have experienced conflict on both sides do to a power struggle. Some people just cannot stand being told what to do, even if you do it with the most sincere heart. I remember a fellow employee of mine who could not take any direction from authority; he had to do it his own way. Of course, this did not last long before he was asked to leave the company. |
Costs: Money Down the Drain | In the scenario I can image there was a lot of costs to their conflict. There was the time that was wasted, and the text said that time was money. There were the costs of all the meetings and the...
