Organic and conventional farming are both farming methods used today by different farmers in Uganda. The farmer would either decide to use the organic way of farming which requires the use of natural farming practices or use conventional which is GMO enhanced. In this case, most organic farmers practice subsistence farming while conventional farmers practice commercial scale farming. However organic agricultural produce are of added value hence competitive in the market (Pimentel et al., 2005), therefore the prices are higher compared to the inorganic produce. This type of farming however can also be favorable for farmers in rural areas producing mostly food for consumption. This is due to the fact that it requires lower input costs as natural practices don’t require a lot of income to start with. (14.82)
In contrast, conventional farming is more favorable for a commercial farmer (Fuller et al., 2005).Modified crops that are genetically enhanced in this case grow faster than the usual traditional crops hence favoring the farmers producing on a larger scale (Pimentel et al., 2005). However, this type of farming needs large capital investments which include chemical inputs, machinery and skilled labor invested in farms for a farmer to achieve the expected production. (14.09)
