Corporate Responsibility and Marketing Strategies
Apple is a multinational corporation whose headquarters is in Cupertino, California. Apple, Inc. was formerly known as Apple Computer, but was changed in 2007. Apple was founded by Steve Jobs, Ronald Wayne, and Steve Wozniak in 1976. Jobs, Wayne, and Wozniak had a vision. Boone & Kurtz (2013) advised that a vision is an overall idea for how to make their business idea a success. Apple vision came true through its technology they develop. Apple is known for its personal computers, designs, mobile communications, and media devices just to name a few. Apple produce products that are technology advanced. Paul (2011) stated: “Apple is committed to ensuring the highest standards of social responsibility wherever our products are made. We insist that our suppliers provide safe working conditions, treat workers with dignity and respect, and use environmentally responsible manufacturing processes.” Apple has trained more than 1.5 million workers on their rights. More than 280,000 people took courses through Apple’s free education and development program. This implementation was to help improve workplace safety conditions. Social Responsibility training has been added to Apple’s new-hire orientation class.
Apple’s current position on the company’s ethical responsibility. What is ethical responsibility? Boone & Kurtz (2013) noted that ethical responsibility is the duty to follow a morally correct path. Apple has ethical responsibilities to their customers, employees, and society. According to, Supplier Responsibility Report (2013) “All over the world, we’re expanding opportunities for workers and ensuring that they’re treated with respect and dignity” Workers must be treated fairly and ethically at all times. Apple has worked very hard to end excessive work hours for their employees, which is an example of treating all employees fairly. Supplier’s Responsibility Report (20113) states that, “We’re working to eradicate unethical hiring and exploitation of workers-even when local laws permit such practices.” Apple has ensure this by allowing 33 specialized audits at different facilities, that’s hiring migrant workers, to determine whose at risk of unfair treatment. Yes, I believe Apple has met its ethical and social responsibilities as a company.
Apple has had several ethical, legal, and social violations, mainly in China. According to, Harris’s scoring system, from the 2012 Harris Poll Reputation Quotient, Apple came first place in reputation. The survey had six different factors. Three of the factors were Social Responsibility, Products and Services, and Workplace Environment. Morris (2013) “In an annual survey of the 60 most visible brands, Apple came out on top with the highest reputation quotient” based on factors ranging from the quality of its products to the quality of life from its employers”. With that being said, Apple has had cases of underage labor, exceeding working hour limits that exceeded FLA code and Apple’s own standards. Also, involuntary labor just to name a few in the media as a violation. Despite the substantial amount of coverage Apple has not lost any demand for its products. Even the customers in China, still show their loyalty to the company, after knowing these working condition the employees had. So, with all this going on, the publication of ethics and social responsibilities violations made by Apple’s Suppliers had no effect on Apple’s reputation. It was not ruined.
