What is Creativity?
What is creativity? Webster's dictionary defines creativity as the quality of being creative. According to Sir Ken Robinson, creativity begins with imagination. He states that “imagination is the ability to step outside of your current state, to bring to life what is unprecedented to our senses.” I do believe that creativity does in fact deal with the imagination. I myself, I have an overactive imagination. The ablilty to create things with a active imagination, has endless possibilities.

Fostering Creativity

According to Sir Ken Robinson's story of the 1930s dancer, the mother thought that her daughter had a medical condition, do to the fact that she could not sit still. If she was to experience this in modern society, people would be quick to slap a medical condition on the daughter, such as ADD, ADHD, etc., which would in term hinder the creativity of the daughter. She would not be able to flourish with something that she enjoys, which would greatly discourage her. Why force a medication for a medical condition, that someone may not have, just to bring the person down.
Another thing that could be of a discouragement in current society, especially within schools, would be that of repetion. Repetion in schools can be considered good study tactics for some things. Repetion can also be a form of discouragement. If you use repetion over and over again, while forcing someone to participate in something that they disliked without changing their environment, they will begin to be discouraged. Harry Chapin's song, Flowers Are Red, is a good example of discouragement in today's society. In the song, a little boy is coloring a picture with flowers on it. His teacher then says that he is coloring the flowers wrong. The teacher mentions that flowers are red, and that their leaves are green. The boy replies informing the teacher, that he is able to see things in every color, and that he will not be forced to follow the rules of the conformity of making the flowers red, instead of a different color.

Conclusion
I think that creativity starts with imagination. Creativity should not be forced, but should not be discouraged either. People should be allowed to flourish, and persue things within their interests.
