Buddhism is not overly concerned with the question of origin and is better understood to be a philosophy. Buddha himself believed in a lifeform or energy as opposed to God. (Hindson & Caner, 2008, p.115) We also learn from Weider and Gutierrez (2013) that Buddhism is a form of the pantheism worldview and as such, “involves reverence for the Universe rather than for any creator being or personal God.â€

The ultimate goal of the Buddhist is the state of Nirvana. Once achieved, the Buddhist can then “leave the bondage of this world and enter a passionless state where one feels neither love nor hate.†(Weider & Gutierrez, 2013, p. 74)
Christianity and Buddhism Compared
Christians believe God is the creator the world and everything in it.
Buddhists do not believe in a personal God and some Buddhists do not believe in God at all but a universal force. “Ultimate reality is a Void, an emptiness.†(Halverson, 1993, p.4)
Christians believe that man was created in the Image of God. Man encompasses a soul and has domain over everything on the earth. Existence has value and man exists even after death.
Buddhists only see man as a higher form in that it brings them closer to the ultimate goal of Nirvana. While man might be higher than animal or other forms of life, all life is sacred because a Buddhist’s reincarnation is based on their acts in the life they are currently living.
Meaning and Purpose
A Christian’s purpose while on earth is to obtain a personal relationship with God. To follow his teachings in the Bible, love one another and spread His word to others.
Buddhists simply want to end their cycles of reincarnation so that they may obtain Nirvana and be released from the sufferings of this world.
As Christians, we base our lives on the teachings of God and Jesus Christ. We believe in a personal, all-knowing and infinite God who created the world as well as mankind. Everything Christians need to know regarding life, ethics, morals and purpose can be found in the teachings of the Bible.
Buddhists base their lives on the teachings of Siddhartha Gautama, Buddha, and his Four Noble Truths and Eightfold...
