Curriculum Guides for Academic Interventions
The following is a curriculum guide intended for special educators to teach reading and writing skills to primary students with EBD. Reading and writing are closely related, mutually supportive linguistic activities. Therefore, developing beginning reading skills through writing activities is an effective approach. Writing requires careful scrutiny of the sound and sequence in order to write words correctly and it is this cognitive process that enables the child to become proficient in the phonetic analysis skills that are the foundation ...view middle of the document...

It follows that increasing student time on task, will increase learning. Unscheduled time often leads to behavioral problems.
Principle #2: Ensure High Rates of Correct Academic Responding
Correct academic responding is important. When the student responds correctly, it shows that he is engaged in the learning and less likely to become angry and act out.
Principle #3: Maximize the Amount of Content Covered
The amount of academic content taught directly influences student achievement. Increased academic success helps to develop positive attitudes towards learning.
Principle #4: Match Assignments to Student Ability For effective instruction to occur, learning tasks and assignments must be at the student’s ability level. Positive behavior and academic achievement occurs when the student is engaged in the academic activities and experiences success.
Principle #5: Teach Academic Content Explicitly
Effective teaching consists of providing clear, explicit instruction to students by demonstrating skills, explaining concepts and giving opportunities for practice and review of content material.
Principle #6: Scaffold Student Instruction
Scaffolding is an instructional strategy in which the teacher provides students with support when they are learning new skills or concepts. By knowing the students cutting edge knowledge, the teacher can introduce material that is hard enough to be interesting and easy enough to be learned.
Principle #7: Use Direct Instruction
This involves instructional design issues such as grouping, lessons and scope and sequences of curriculum material.
Principle #8: Monitor Student Progress
It is important to have continuous monitoring to insure student is benefiting by the instruction.
Effective Instructional Strategies that Support Effective Instruction for EBD Students:

• Use reading/writing connection: The skills for each process are mutually supportive. The analytical sound and sequencing skills required in generating words is good practice in decoding words.

• Task Analysis: Breaking down assignments into small, manageable steps promotes academic achievement and decreases the possibility of student frustration.
• Modeling: Provides students with explicit directions on how to correctly complete tasks. Modeling demonstrates specific academic and behavioral expectations to students, which EBD students require.
• Immediate Feedback: This keeps students actively engaged and on task with the correct information to promote learning.
• Referencing /Copying from Book: Provides academic support for students, which reduces the risk of frustration and keeps students on task.

• Motivation: When students are motivated, they are more focused and actively involved in classroom learning.
