, der var under optrapning. Jeg vil redegøre for kvindesynet i slutningen af 1800-tallet, og se hvordan det kommer til udtryk i “Professor Hieronimus”. Der ud over vil jeg analysere bogen, hvor jeg vil ligge vægt på Elses sammenbrud, der opstår pga. rollekonflikten: kunstner versus hustru og mor. Til sidst vil jeg ligge vægt på den patriarkalske behandlings - og familieform Else Kant og de andre patienter oplever på 6te afdeling, som i sidste ende fører til denne kritik af hospitalsmagten.

Samtidens kvindesyn. ”… at hæve Kvinden i aandelig, sædelig og økonomisk Henseende og saaledes tillige gøre hende til et selvstændigere Medlem af Familie og Stat, navnlig ved at aabne Adgang til Selverhverv”. Dette var i 1871 den første formålsparagraf fra Dansk Kvindesamfund. Organisationen blev stiftet af to kvinder, der kæmpede for deres egne og andre kvinders rettigheder. De åbnede op gennem slut 1800-tallet en handelsskole for kvinder, en søndagsskole for de arbejdende og tjenende kvinder og det der i dag svarer til dansk designskole. Dansk Kvindesamfund lagde et pres på den daværende regeringen og sørgede i 1880 også for, at gifte kvinder fik råderet over sine egne tjente penge.

I 1880‘erne var også en voldsom debat i fokus - sædelighedsfejden - der handlede om køn og moral. Kvindelige forfattere, intellektuelle og kvindesagsforkæmpere, der deltog i debatten, så nye muligheder for kvinderne i samfundet. De kønsroller og den moral, der havde domineret samfundet, var nu under pres fra et samfund i udvikling pga. Industrialiseringen og moderniteten. Kvindernes rolle havde hidtil kun indebåret dét at være hustru og mor. De måtte være tålmodige, moderlige og frem for alt udvise kyskhed. Hvis en kvinde udviste seksuel drift blev de stemplet som mentalt forstyrrede. Dette var dog lige omvendt for mænd. Her gik Dansk Kvindesamfund ind for, at udelukkende seksualitet inden for ægteskabet stadig burde gælde, men også for mænd. Mens en forfatter, som George Brandes var meget frisindet i forhold til familien som institution og den stramt regulerede seksualitet 2 Hovedparten af alle familier levede dengang under den patriarkalske familieform. Manden var overhoved (patriarkat). Hverken kvinden eller børnene havde noget at skulle have sagt. Deres mulighed for selvrealisering var underordnet, hvilket vi også ser et eksempel på i “professor Hieronimus”, bl.a. da Elses oplever en konflikt i sit job som kunstner. Mange kvindelige kunstnere i tiden oplevede faktisk denne frustration - at de efter at være indgået i et ægteskab ikke kunne udtrykke sig i deres kunst. Iréne Matthis (psykoanalytiker) mente, at kvinderne overførte deres egne evner og begavelse på ægtemanden. De hæmmede derfor sig selv i at udfolde sig kunstnerisk 3 .
