Introduction:An issue that has been escalating in severity in the world is dating in the workplace. More and more co-workers are starting to extend their relationships past a professional level and go onto an intimate basis. This issue is considered a problem that needs to be resolved because mixing one's personal life with their life at work could play a role in lower performance and could cause an uncomfortable environment for other workers. Although this can cause a loss in productivity, an employer forbidding workplace romance could be accused of invading his employees' privacy and trying to dictate their social life as well as their life in the workplace, but if a relationship is allowed to endure freely in the workplace, it could have disastrous effects.Planning:An employer must first decide to what extent he or she will allow the relationship to take place during the workday. Job Design:If two people in one office are known to be romantically linked, a manager might want to take necessary steps to ensure that neither employee's performance suffers. A solution could be to implement conflicting job designs. The decision to change job designs is an employer's way of solving the problem him/herself. If the two people have little interaction one on one at work, there is less of a chance of a conflict of interest. A fight with mate could ruin any person's workday but imagine if, instead of being away from all the problems while you work, they're right there staring you in the face. Employers should make sure that if these people are indeed a couple, a bond where fighting and disagreements are common, they should possibly be located in different areas of the office. This is a sure way to curb chances of your employees bringing a personal problem to work with them as well as eliminate beliefs of favoritism by other workers.I am referring to the occasion where in the romantic couple, one person is subordinate to another. This could cause the rest of your employees to think that because a manager is sleeping with someone, they are getting special treatment. Having romantically linked employees working in different parts of your office will eliminate this feeling.Performance Appraisals:A decision to hold regular performance appraisals is a good idea in any company, not only those which have to deal with the problem of dating in the workplace. If designing the jobs of romantically linked people for minimum interaction is not possible, their fate in the company rests in their own hands in the form of performance appraisals. I believe the best way to hold a performance appraisal is to have the people who work closely with the individual give the appraisals. Some questions to be asked in the appraisal could be "Has this person's relationship at work effected his or her performance?" or "Has this person's relationship at work ever caused a disturbance?" A manager can get a very accurate idea of a person's performance through others' perspectives and opinions.
