Hello everyone, this is Estelle Vogel death penalty expert and I would just like to say, Thank you Governor for giving me the opportunity to speak on the death penalty/ controlling crime. I would like to begin my analysis of whether to abolish the death penalty in the state Ellieland by giving my opinion of effectiveness. The definition of effective according to Webster’s Dictionary is “Producing a result that is wanted: having an intended effect.” Now by knowing this definition, the major question is, is the death penalty effective? Does the death penalty produce the desired result that publics want? The desired result is for Capital Crimes to be reduced and for tax dollars to be used ...view middle of the document...
We as a nation really rely on the police force and government to make sure that our neighborhoods and loved ones are safe from those who do create a threat to the community. But, some criminals need to be prosecuted because keeping them alive puts the wider community, fellow prisoners, and prison enforcement (guards) at risk. By keeping these violent criminals in prison, we are putting other peoples life’s at stake. The risk of trying to contain them is much greater for all these surrounding people than just executing the one person who committed the capitol crime. Fellow prisoners are at most risk. We are exposing people with not as severe crimes (who may get out within a couple of years) to murderers and rapists. It is unjust and not showing “mercy” to these people to who didn’t commit an intense crime, to put their lives in this much danger. Guards who are just performing their jobs are at risk too. Offenders who should have received the death penalty are often assaulting and even killing guards (innocent people just doing their job.) For example, there was an inmate, Richard Franklin who was in Columbia County Correctional Institution for conviction of murder in March 2012. With nothing to lose, Richard Franklin lured Sgt. Ruben Thomas down to his cell and brutally killed him, stabbing him 14 times. Now this criminal was able to take a second life on an innocent person just because we did not want to end his life by using the death penalty. The community is also at risk from violent offenders because they can either escape prison or can be paroled early due to an ineffective parole system. The safest solution for all of us who want safety for our friends and family, is to use the death penalty for these violent offenders before they can be a threat and create risk once again. Fewer crimes will be able to be committed by that violent offender once they are put on death row.
Capital punishment is a huge deterrent we have to prevent others from committing violent, intense crimes. Criminals should be aware that that if they commit a serious crime, then their punishment will be equally as serious. No one wants to die; this is why using the death penalty as a deterrent is an effective way of stopping crimes from happening in the first place. By having the death penalty in play, it can stop people from even becoming criminals and even entering the criminal system because the most valuable thing you possess “ your life” is...
