Defining Marketing Essay

Marketing has been around for as long as anyone can remember, of course there were different ways of marketing yet it was still the same. Whether it was a salesman during the Wild West; selling dreams of a richer life out west, or a trade between hunters in African villages. Their items had to be marketed. I feel that marketing is the ability to provide goods or services to the consumer. There are of course more technical terms that I will touch on to better explain the marketing process and what it can do for a business.

Marketing falls under a shelter that covers sales, promoting the product, public relations, and most importantly advertising. Marketing is needed to promote a product or service to a potential customer. Without marketing a business can offer the greatest product or the next big thing, but none of the potential customers would be aware of it. This is how companies end up crashing and burning because information was not presented to the target audience or potential buyers.
There are several processes that an organization has to go through in order to be successful. The first thing is to know your potential buyers, i.e. who are we trying to target, does our potential customers aware of our product, how are we getting the word out? Without a successful marketing plan our potential customers will not be aware of what the business offers. If the business fails at this, it will not succeed in selling the product; this is why getting the word out is essential.
Once the public is aware of the product that is being marketed, it will increase the chances that consumers will purchase the product. When people are aware of a product it becomes a reality, almost as if it is a part of their life and with this the word will spread which will increase sales.
There are several companies that have successful marketing strategies. The first one is Geico Insurance Company. This business has taken the use of media advertisement to become a household name. They are noted for using more branded characters at one time than any other organization in the history of marketing! Presently they have no less than six different ads running, all of which have their own different style, tone, and message. This is a prime example of how a successful marketing strategy can make a company successful. The next example that I will use is the Wal-Mart power house.
