Differences in Competencies of Associate degree and Baccalaureate degree level nursing
Education level of nurses makes differences in their nursing practice. Researches show that staffing with graduate nurses helped to reduce the injuries to the patients. That includes pressure ulcers, infections, contagious diseases and cardiopulmonary diseases. Nurse’s regular assessment and evaluation are helpful for early detection of diseases and that may contribute to a better outcome. Nurses are being with the patients most of their assigned period of work, so able to notice the significant symptoms and implement care with advanced knowledge. Knowledge about usual dosage, action and side effects of medications minimize medication error.
Baccalaureate nursing advances the knowledge that helps for assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementing, and critical thinking. Critical thinking and decision making are important in nursing profession for better outcome of the patient. “All decisions involve risk. Therefore decisions in nursing should be influenced by risk taking propensity of the individual nurse” (Masters M L. & Masters R J, 1989). Knowledge about procedures and experiences give courage to take risk and nurses able to take decision easily. Decision making and critical thinking helps for a better outcome. Theories of baccalaureate degree helps to provide quality care for the patient. Both associate and baccalaureate nurse have same technical skills, but baccalaureate nurse has more critical thinking and they think about the outcome.
When associate nurse giving care for the patient, baccalaureate nurse give care for family and community. These thoughts are important for our community that provides preventive education, early detection of the disease, curative treatment and education for self care at home. Community level...
