Discernment Essay

1968 words - 8 pages

Discernment: A Blessing For All?
What is discernment? Is it something only the old and wise can have? Or is it something more at hand, something we can all have? Discernment is an important part in a Christians life, as it is in every persons life. The dictionary defines discernment as the ability to judge well. Discernment, to me, means the ability to decide between truth and error, right and wrong. The Bible does not speak of discernment only once but it does so multiple times. It teaches that it is the responsibility of every Christian to be discerning “But examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil." (First Thessalonians 5:21-22). ...view middle of the document...

After that it is up to us if we will obey God or disobey him. The three D’s define what discernment should be to us as Christians.
Most people nowadays don't take the time to think. This is why there is so much hate, war, and violence. People act on their instincts, instead of taking the time to look at the big picture. It is us being ignorant and just going by what seems to be the easier path. We as Christians should not be doing this for we should be practicing discernment. And a good method to make morally correct decisions by discernment is through STOP. STOP basically stands for four things, Search, Think, Others, and Pray. These four simple tasks help us keep everything in check and make sure we make a truly good decision, not just what sounds best at the time. If we all lived by STOP the would could really and truly be a better place, not just people but our whole situation here on earth would change. There would no spite, hatred, violence, war, famine, and just plain evil in the world. If we really stop and think we would start to notice how many of these steps we sincerely follow all these steps before making a big or even small decision. I for one know that most people don’t even follow half of these steps when making decisions. Because if people did, most of the stuff happening today in the world would have never have come about.
The S in STOP stands for search out the facts. It means to be observant, it is basically the same as the step to detect in the Three D’s of discernment. We must search out the facts because things are not always as they seem. The bible clearly states the same thing in that there are people who “hold fast to themselves for an evil purpose; they talk of laying snares secretly; they devise injustices..." (Psalm 64:5-6). What we learn is that evil is often disguised or hidden so that it may easily lure us into sinning. So we must ask questions to reveal three moral aspects of every action: The moral object (the what), intention or motive (the why), and the circumstances (the why). The moral object is the moral content of an action that suggests wether it is good or bad. Intention is the aim or objective of an action, for this we must make sure we always keep our intentions good and make sure we understand that the ends do not justify the means. If we are performing an action no matter how good, if our intentions are in the wrong place this makes the whole action bad. And the circumstances are what the conditions around the event are, why it is happening. These question help us reveal wether the matter of our action is right or wrong. We always have to be watching out for it, always have to keep our eyes open searching for the facts.
The next step is Think about alternatives and consequences. We have to think about we are doing, we cannot act on impulse alone. People frequently act on impulse and this often results bad. We must know what we are doing is going to affect us later on in life no matter how...
