Big Five Personality Types

Oftentimes we hear someone say, “That person has a great personality”. What exactly does that means? Personality is the combination of characteristics or qualities that forms an individual’s distinctive character ("What Is Personality", 2014). Characteristic such as how we think, feel, and look shapes our personality. In order to get a better understanding of my personality, I took the Big Five Personality Test.
The Big Five Personality Test characterizes personality into five dimensions: Extraversion, Conscientiousness, Agreeableness, Emotional Stability, and Openness to Experience. I agree with this assessment 100 percent. However, I was disappointed in my conscientiousness personality score.
The Big Five Personality Test revealed both my strengths and weaknesses. I scored lower than expected in the conscientiousness dimension. However, I’ve been told to be more open-minded. I have the tendency to not trust what I cannot see which is an area I need to improve in. On the other hand, I scored very high in the extraversion dimension. The characteristics of extraversion describe my personality inside and out. I learned early on in my sales career how to use my personality to my advantage. For example, when I started working in sales 10 years ago. At first, I followed a sales pitch when speaking to potential customers. However, I wasn’t getting the results I wanted too. I later realize my ability to talk to people and make them feel like I am there friend. Once I realize my personality was one of my greatest weapons, I was able to excel above and beyond what was required.
The Big Five Personality Test was very insightful. My highest score was in the extraversion dimension of all the dimensions. Having an outgoing personality can also help me improve my overall job performance. One of my career goals is to become a member of management. Managers must be able to communicate effectively to be successful. Researcher say extraversion personality was associated with managers and salesperson. Individuals who score high in extraversion are known to be energetic, full of life, and positive. Those traits are necessary to be successful members of management.
How we feel, think, and act is a direct link to our personality. The Big Five Personality Test breaks down personality into five dimensions. The test revealed my strength, weaknesses, and areas that needed improvement. Understanding my personality will help me improve my performance and reach my career goals.
